Skills audit: Livetype and soundtrack pro

Today we were given an introduction to LiveType and Soundtrach Pro. Two professional grade software application that would obviously be need in the creation of our opening thriller sequence.

LiveType allowed to us to create titles that could easily be exported to our film in final cut. It included many features giving you the ability to change just about anything you wanted; Some of the things i enjoyed played around with were the transition effects, their was a huge range and adjusting them on the timeline gave you another degree of control over the way your text could appear, it was easy to adjust the speed and with many effects you had access to the character movements in all direction with a bit of simple tweeaking. This program allows you to change the whole text or apply different style to individual characters and i experimented with drop shadows, glows, colour tints, rotation. Each can be altered to a surprisingly high degree, for example the density of the glow or the angle and position on the x/y axis of the shadows.

Soundtrack pro
much like the other programs we used soundtrack pro is based around a timeline with different layers for seperate musical instruments, rythems and beats. It has an extensive database of souds from one off effects to background music loops and it's easy to place them on the timeline, overlapping different layers and dragging the mouse to simply extend and sorten the sounds. I worked out a way to fade sounds by dragging the corner of bars down and along itself, which worked well but i would like to spend some more time with this software if i get the chance as it's obviously a powerful tool with far greater potential than what i was able to produce with it today

[Above a little clip of a thriller-esque sountrack i was experimenting with during this skills audit - Nothing will show if accessing via a connection that blocks flash eg. the college internet, sorry can't be helped!]

I hope we are able to transfer the skills from this lesson onto our final production.

Pitching our idea

Pitch

I've uploaded our pitch on a site called scribd so it can be easily viewed at anyone's leisure, it includes our production schedule amongst everything else. Pitching was an informative experience where we were able to get feedback from people more experienced in the industry

Match Cut | Prelim Task | Holly

Unfortunately i was sick the day my group were editing the preliminary match cut we did together. Since it was important i prove i can edit for my teachers i was happy to go out and film again and instead i edited the clip above. It went well and i think the match cut opening the door works well. When filming the shot-reverse shots we wanted to experiment with point-of-view shots and so decided to use them instead of over the shoulder for the dialogue exchange since the task didn't state a preference. They allowed you to emphasize with the characters more than over the shoulder shots where you feel more like an onlooker. Over the shoulder might have given it more of a professional feel overall however that was irrelevant with this exercise. While the emphasis of this exercise was creating a match cut we were also told to be careful not to break the 180 degree rule, a new guideline we were introduced to that is common knowledge when filming. Simply put, when two characters are conversing and we imagine a line going straight through them both we mucst be careful to keep the camera over on one side. If you where to cross over sides the characters lose there left/right relationship and it can become confusing to the viewer or just uncomfortable to watch.

Planning preliminary match cut exercise including storyboard

My group and I chose to make a class report scenario for the match cut exercise we had to do, we done this in a classroom, the clip begins by showing the student walking down the corridor into the classroom looking very nervous, there will be a long-shot of the student as he is walking towards the camera and close-ups on his feet and face. The original idea for the next scene was an Ariel-shot but this was declined as it would look unprofessional. When the student takes a seat there will be a quick over the shoulder shot of the teacher holding her notes. Once the student has been seated the camera will reverse from the teacher to the student as they speak so you can see the facial expressions, the camera will be a mid-shot.

Skills audit: Livetype and sound

In Friday’s lesson we learnt how to use Livetype and soundtrack pro, I found soundtrack pro much more intriguing and enjoyable. I did not have any difficulties with it, it was fun listening to all the beats and mix and matching them. All you had to do was listen to a sound and if you liked it you just drag it to the timeline to make a soundtrack. The program was pretty easy and straightforward to use.

Livetype was also easy and straightforward to use, it had various animations for text types. To change your text you would insert text into a textbox then click on the tabs to change font, size and animate it, you could also animation the background.

planning preliminary match cut exercise including storyboard

for the match cut exercise we decided in making a class report scenario which was held in a classroom, this clip would only have the teacher and the student acting. the short clip was expected to star to of with with the student walking down the corridor looking distressed and
worried about is future at the collage, the camera would catch him walking down the corridor to wards the camera, the next shot was a closeup of the students facial expressions and have him breath deeply as he is about to enter the room, this shot will be at a low angle, a followup shot of the student gripping the door handle, as he enters the student will be cough by an extreme long shot showing his surroundings. as he is about to sit down the camera takes an over the shoulder shot of the teacher shuffling the paper in her hands.

when the student and teacher are settled down the camera will do a shot reverse shot starting with the teacher telling him what he has to improve on and giving him advice on what to do. In the story board the camera was supposed to take an areal shot of the two talking but that was refused because the areal shot wont make sense and would make the clip look very unprofessional. the 180 degree rule wouldnt be broken because we decided to set the interview table beside a wall. at the end of the interview the teacher would tell the student good news that he got into music in university, the student would be shockingly surprised.

that was our storyboard on the match cut exercise.

Thriller Sub-Genres

Action thriller: In which the work often features a race against the clock, contains lots of violence, and an obvious antagonist. These films usually contain large amounts of guns, explosions, and large elaborate set pieces for the action to take place.
imgres.jpg imgres.jpg

Crime thriller: This particular genre is a hybrid type of both crime films and thrillers that offers a suspenseful account of a successful or failed crime or crimes. These films often focus on the criminal(s) rather than a policeman. Crime thrillers usually emphasize action over psychological aspects.

imgres.jpg imgres.jpg

Phycological Thriller: In which (until the often violent resolution) the conflict between the main characters is mental and emotional, rather than physical.

MI5 denies withholding

documents in Binyam Mohammed case

Binyam Mohamed
Binyam Mohamed has been involved in a lengthy legal battle

The head of MI5 has denied his staff withheld documents relating to the torture of a UK resident from a House of Commons scrutiny committee.

It has been suggested that a senior judge believed MI5 "deliberately misled" the Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee.

But MI5 director-general Jonathan Evans told the Daily Telegraph the claim was "the precise opposite of the truth".

The material concerns former Guantanamo Bay detainee Binyam Mohamed.

Ethiopian-born Mr Mohamed, 31, alleges that UK authorities knew he was tortured at the behest of US authorities after his detention in Pakistan in 2002.

On Wednesday, the Court of Appeal ruled that the government must publish a seven-paragraph summary of exactly what British intelligence officials were told about his treatment.

The summary revealed that his treatment was "cruel, inhuman and degrading" and included deliberate sleep deprivation.

Into With Camera: Health & Safety Tutorial

Few lessons back we were introduced to the equipment that we would be using during making our thriller opening. The camcorder is obviously the most important piece of equipment that we will be needing. If we never had use of the camera we would have had to done a title sequence without no footage and i just don't think it would have worked well. We was given a camcorder, Battery and tripod.

We were shown on a presentation how to use the equipment correctly. We had one camcorder on each table which we was to follow each step to make sure we all had the understanding of all the different functions and use of the camcorder. The camcorder had a built in mic what was good at picking up sounds therefore wouldn't
need a extra add on mic however we could get one of the technician if needed. Anyways the camcorder had no battery in at first that was one thing we had to do our self after watching the teacher show us where and how it goes in, also the memory cards would go in a different slot on the side of the camcorder. Everyone on the table had to each show that they knew how to use the camcorder correctly. This included the an on/off button, The viewfinder, Focusing and inserting the battery + memory cards.

We was told it was important to keep the lens shutter closed while not recording due to the fact if it gets tiny finger prints on or specs of dust it will show up when we go to edit the clips. While recording we could press 'QR eview' to play back the last few minutes of the last clips, This was good because we could see what we had recorded previously and could carry on without getting mixed up or lost within the clips.

memory cards:
We was given two 'A+B' with our group number on. It was important we got the right card number so we had the right footage for our group. On each card there was up to 1hr40 minutes on each. There is a locked thing on the side what we had to make sure was unlocked before putting it into the camera or it would not let you record onto the Memory card. The card got inserted into the side of the camcorder and you can put both cards in at the same time. However if we needed any extra memory we could get some. Once finished with the cards we had to put them in little cases to make sure they didn't get damaged.

The Battery,
The two batteries given had 2 hours recording time on them each. We got shown where and how to insert the battery into the recorder. If no battery was inserted the camera would obviously not turn on due to no power.

The Tripod was given to us to make sure the camera was not moving around while we filmed, it and reduce the camera from shaking, It allows movement so we could take verious shots while the camera was standing on the tripod. It had extended legs so we could reduce the height of the camera.

Before being allowed any equipment every class member each had to sign a form showing we was responsible with it while in our hands. Each time we was to take a piece of equipment out we had to get one group member to sign a for
m telling the technicians where we was going with the equipment and how long we would be this needed to be taken with the 'media card'. We all had the chance to book cameras over night but you had to be quick if you wanted it due to the amount of groups that there was.

All the equipment was expensive and it was made clear that if anything got damaged then everyone in that group including the person who done the damage would all have to contribute to what ever the cost was that got damaged. So therefore we had to take extra care with all the equipment we took out and make sure nothing got lost.

Skills Audit: Soundtrack Pro

Also in fridays lesson after we found out how to use Livetype we got shown how to use Soundtrack pro i learned how to Listern to the sounds however it was important that you only click them once if you click twice another box will come up and it wont allow you to put any sounds on your timeline. Also learnt that You also have to drag and drop sounds on to the timelime to make a soundtrack. we got told it was easier to put the soudns on differnt lines so it would not be so complicated for us. However you can over lap sounds so that two differnt sounds going on at the same time.Within the tutorial i found out how to delete sounds that were not needed or if they didnt go well with the rest of the tracks i could remove them or just rearrange so that the beat all flowed well.

I found some interestings beats and combinded many sounds that went well together the variety of sounds can be found at the right hand of the program.

The image below shows what the browser with the all the sounds that i could find. I only had to drag and drop them to the timeline if i wanted to use them

The art of the title sequence

The title sequence in the incredible hulk appeals to me most as I think it is very versatile from the rest, it begins with flashing images from a comic book and then it moves into ‘Marvel studios’ which is in big and bold as they are very important. The suspense in the title sequence appeals to me to most and the background music makes it quite thrilling as well.

The title ‘The incredible Hulk’ looks powerful as it has a glowing light behind it which also tells us the it is going to be an action film. The font itself clarifies the strength of the character the word ‘Hulk’ seems to be much bulkier and bolder than the part ‘the incredible', the boldness of the font refers to the character as a male.

Audit Bait Tutorial

I learnt how to use the program ‘Final cut pro’. This program will be used for the final editing of our project and to also add a soundtrack to it . At first I found the concept of it quite challenging as the program was new to me and it took me a while to grasp the hang of it but by the end of the lesson I figured it out.

On the left hand side of the picture is the section were the clips we were going to edit were held. To begin cutting a clip you press the 'I' button were you want your clip to begin and the 'O' button were you want it to end. When i finished cutting i would drag it to the canvas were it will automatically be transfered to the timeline.

Into With Camera: Health & Safety Tutorial
We were introduced to the media equipment we are going to be using throughout our project. We were shown on a presentation how to use the equipment accurately and we were given a demonstration. We were also old the price of the camcorder which shocked me which encouraged me to pay even more attention so that then I used it I would not break it! The two batteries given had 2 hours recording time on them each.
We were given a Tripod so that the camera would not be handheld all the time which would have been highly unprofessional for our film. It allowed movement it various directions and it also had extended legs so we could adjust the height. While setting up your tripod you should try to find a flat surface to put it on. If you need to set up on a hill, make sure that you put two of the tripod's legs on the downhill slant. Begin by undoing the locks on the tripod legs and spreading the legs apart. Then, let the legs fall until the tripod is at the desired height for your shoot.

skills Audit- livetype and sound

the audio tutorial this lesson was fun and very easy to use. in the tutorial we learnt how to select a certain beat or sound and insert it into the timeline, we learnt to introduce different beats into the timeline to make the instrumental, the volume of each tune could be altered in the way you want, using the software was easy and straight forward to use. you could make a beat to match your title sequence.

live type is easy to use and has many different animations for your text to fit into, to start off you would have to insert your text in to a small ox and then on the right of the screen there are tabs which when clicked can change the font, texture size and angle of the text and animation can be inserted, the animation could refer to your film, for our film project we did a card game. on the animation tab there was a animation which showed cards flipping over to revalue letters this was used in our one.

High explosives found by Harrow Estate

The explosives - of a type usually used on railways - could have been highly
dangerous if ignited, Harrow Council said.

They were made safe by police who cornered off the site and began an investigation after Monday's find.

Mr Beardon said: "We had gone to the area like we do every week to clear the bins and disinfect, when I stumbled across what looked like a takeaw

ay coffee cup.

"But when I picked it up, it was labelled as explosives and had what looked like a lot of cartridges packed tightly inside."

He added: "I have never come across explosives before but we have discovered guns, dead pets, and people sleeping in bin areas before so we never rule anything out!Runners in the London

Marathon could cross the £500m mark in fundraising for charities since the race started 30 years ago.

Thriller clip Deja Vu

There are numerous ways in the film in which the director delivered many scenes of suspense. There is digetic and non digetic sound which adds to the building up of the tension. On 2:30 when the doll is floating in the water you can sense that something bad is going to happen. The tension Is created by a series of casual occurring misleading the audience into thinking that everything is going to be okay, but you can tell by the music that something will happen.Spontaneously at the end of the scene there is a massive explosion which could shock the view as it is not what they would of excepted

News and current affairs

Doncaster torture case:

Two brothers aged 12 and 10 have admitted carrying out a sustained attack on two boys in parkland in South Yorkshire during which their victims were tortured, beaten, robbed and sexually assaulted. One of the victims, an 11-year-old boy, almost died when part of a bathroom sink was smashed against his head. He was only saved when local people went out searching after the other boy, aged nine, was found wandering a street in Edlington, on the edge of Doncaster, severely traumatised and covered in blood, the brothers also used a noose, lighted cigarettes, bricks and sharp ends of sticks to torment their victims.

This atrousious event could be a sicking but great storyline for a psychological horror film.

Thriller sub genres

Thriller films cover a variety of sub genres such as: action, psychological, horror etc...

Horror films inspire me at the momment because the tension in horror films excite me and have me on the edge of my seat. Their plots frequently involve themes of death, the supernatural or mental illness. Many horror movies also include a central villain.

suspense

Suspense is a term most often used in dramatic work. The technique is specifically used in order to give an audience a feeling of anxiety towards the outcome of certain events. It usually occurs in situations leading up to a big event or moment. Tension is often associated with suspense as one of the primary emotions felt by the audience. Suspense can also be described as a combination of anticipation and uncertainty, often used when referring to future events.
Suspense makes you feel slightly edgy, as you wonder what will happen in the next scene and/or episode.
Audiences find suspense attractive as it leaves them something to think about as they look forward to watching the rest of the story as it progresses. I would go to see a film with suspense in it as it adds depth to the film because the story is not obvious and requires you to think.
Suspense is created when the audience expect a bad even to happen within a film, and although they believe to have a superior knowledge of it, they are powerless to
prevent it. This clip below is a perfect example of a suspense scene

detailed analysis of the thriller clip analysed in class

the thriller clip we have seen in class was 'No Country for Old Men', this film was produced by Paramount and written by Ethan Coen Joen Coen. the film was released on the 18th of january 2008 and won four oscars which were best achievement in directing, best motion picture of the year, best performance by an actor in a supporting role and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published. The genre of the film was crime, drama, thriller, western. the film had a budget of $25 million and made a cross revenue of $162 million

LiveType

In to days lesson we learnt about livetype,
LiveType is a software program developed by Apple Inc. to create animated title sequences for video projects.
We was not told to do any specific tasks ,instead we was asked to just play around with all the features and get a feeling for it

how is suspense created in the film i watched in class

this film misleads the audience to create shock, at the begginig of the film we see the good guy get his hands on some money, the good guy notices that he has a killer hunting him down for the money. at first the audiance is misled into thinking that that this is going to be another good guy bad guy thing bit in this film it is reverce, we see the good guy get gunned down outside a motel. the film created false suspense, this shock is more shocking because we never know what will happen. as the killer kills the good guys wife he leaves, calm non diegetic music is inthe background as he is driving down a quiet suburban hightbourhood then 'Bang' he gets hit from the side by an incoming vehical, this shocks the audiance more as you think the film is about to end.

Final Cut Pro Bait Tutorial

In todays lesson we were learning how to use the program Final cut pro. We had the Bait tutorial which showed us how to use the fuctions of Final Cut Pro which we was going to use for our final piece of film coursework.
Once Final Cut Pro was opened three seperate windows appeared, One of the windows had all the film clips which were recorded on the memory cards,
The second was the clips itself from which i could edit e.g increase/decrease speed or cut unwanted parts.
The third and final windows allowed us to view the final sequence with all the edits attached.

To cut parts from your clips you had to use inputs and outputs what where two little lines to take out the parts of the clips that you wanted by doing this you could cut out the extra sounds and mistakes which was in the clips. once themistakes or unwanted parts were edited out you had to single click on the clip and drag it onto the timeline.

Skills Audit: Livetype

In todays lesson we got showed how to use the Live type Programme. This programme is to know how to do title sequences for our future thriller film. There were many different fonts and effects that we could choose from.

The image above shows what i did in lesson. I Decided to use a basic font. Then filled the word 'snap' in black and made it slightly blured. In the blackground you can see slight black lines they spin once i click play.

The image below however shows the different layers that i used. Every effect, word or font i use would goes onto this timeline. However you can also edit the effects or time there you can make it longer, faster or even shorted.

The next image is showing what one of the boxes on livetype looked like. This comes up to show all the different fonts, effects and backgrounds you could use however there all in different tabs. You can reduce the size of the text, the spacing inbetween and also jumple the letters up. The red line i have put around one the images is showing where i could write my text that would appear on my main image.

Finally the last image below shows the Importunacy of the green lines on the main screen where you put your text. If you go out the first green line on some cases some of the text will not show up and the title sequence will not work. some parts may be missing so it is imporant to keep the text and effects with the first green line.
